Beginner's Guide to E-Bike Hire in the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland

July 30, 2026

If you’ve never ridden an e-bike before, the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland are about as good a place as any in the country to give it a try – and Dunsop Bridge, right in the heart of it, is where we’re based to help you get started.

Why Choose the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland

This part of Lancashire offers an unusually complete range of riding within a small area – gentle valley lanes along the Hodder and Ribble, testing climbs like the Trough of Bowland, and genuine off-road trails at Gisburn Forest. Wherever your confidence level, there’s a route nearby that suits you, all within a 30-mile radius of our base near Dunsop Bridge.

What Makes E-Bikes Different

An e-bike works just like a normal pedal bike, but with an integrated electric motor that assists while you pedal – it isn’t a scooter or a moped, and you can’t simply twist a throttle and be carried along. The assistance makes hills and longer distances far more manageable, without taking away the exercise and enjoyment of cycling itself.

Choosing Your First Route

For a first-time e-bike ride, we’d suggest starting gently – our Hodder Valley routes or a ride out to Slaidburn are ideal, offering enough scenery and interest to feel like a proper day out without demanding serious fitness or bike-handling experience. Once you’re comfortable with how the assistance levels work, tackling something like the Trough of Bowland becomes a realistic and rewarding next step.

What to Expect When You Hire

When you collect your bike from us, we’ll run through the controls, adjust the saddle height, and make sure you’re comfortable before you set off – usually a 15 to 30 minute briefing depending on your experience. You don’t need any special equipment or clothing; normal, comfortable outdoor wear is all that’s required for most of our routes.

Who Rides With Us

We regularly welcome complete beginners, families with children, older riders who find hills harder than they used to, and people building fitness back up after injury or illness – there really is no “typical” e-bike rider. The common thread is wanting to see more of this beautiful part of Lancashire without being limited by fitness or terrain.

Planning Your Visit

Whether you’re looking for a couple of hours pottering along the river, or a full day tackling one of the tougher routes further into the Forest of Bowland, our team can help you plan a route that matches your ability and interests.
