Bolton-by-Bowland and Sawley are two of the Ribble Valley’s quietest, prettiest villages – and because they see so little passing traffic, they make for some of the most relaxing cycling anywhere within reach of our Dunsop Bridge base.
The Route
From Dunsop Bridge, the ride to Bolton-by-Bowland covers around 10 miles via Slaidburn and Grindleton, following quiet lanes with rolling rather than punishing gradients. It’s a comfortable route for a relaxed half-day, with enough variety in the scenery to keep things interesting without demanding a huge level of fitness.
Bolton-by-Bowland
The village is built around two greens and a duck pond, with a 15th-century church and a genuine sense of having changed very little in the last century or two. It’s a lovely spot to stop, take photos, and enjoy a village that rarely sees more than a handful of visitors at any one time.
On to Sawley
A few miles further brings you to Sawley, home to the ruins of Sawley Abbey on the banks of the River Ribble. The Spread Eagle at Sawley has a strong reputation locally and makes an excellent lunch stop, particularly if you’re planning to sit outside beside the river on a fine day.
Extending the Ride
Confident riders can continue from Sawley towards Gisburn or loop back via Grindleton and Chatburn for a longer day taking in more of the western Ribble Valley. Alternatively, simply retrace your route back through Bolton-by-Bowland and Slaidburn for a straightforward there-and-back day.
Why This Route Suits Most Riders
Neither Bolton-by-Bowland nor Sawley demands serious climbing to reach, making this one of our more accessible longer rides – ideal for families with slightly older children, or for anyone wanting a scenic day out without tackling the steeper climbs found elsewhere in the Forest of Bowland.
