Chipping is regularly named one of the prettiest villages in England, and the ride there from Dunsop Bridge – taking in Longridge Fell along the way – is one of our favourite recommendations for a scenic, moderately challenging half-day out.
The Ride to Chipping
From Dunsop Bridge, the route to Chipping covers around 8 miles, typically via the Trough road before dropping south towards the village. It’s a good introduction to the more challenging side of Bowland cycling, with a couple of solid climbs that are made entirely manageable by your e-bike’s motor.
Exploring Chipping
The village itself is full of well-preserved stone buildings, several dating back centuries, along with a scattering of independent shops including the well-known Chipping Farm Shop – an excellent stop for local produce and a coffee before continuing your ride.
Longridge Fell
Longridge Fell rises to the south of Chipping and offers some of the best panoramic views in this part of Lancashire, taking in the Ribble Valley, the Bowland fells, and on a clear day, as far as the Lake District fells to the north. The climb up is a proper test even with electric assistance, but the views from the top make it entirely worthwhile.
A Loop Option
Confident riders can extend this into a longer loop, continuing over Longridge Fell towards Hurst Green and Stonyhurst before looping back north towards Dunsop Bridge – taking in a good cross-section of Ribble Valley scenery across a full day.
Best Time to Ride
This route is particularly rewarding in autumn, when the woodland around Chipping and the lower slopes of Longridge Fell turn a genuine range of golds and reds – well worth timing your visit around if you can.

The climb up Longridge Fell is the kind of gradient that would leave most riders needing a long rest at the top on a conventional bike. With electric assistance, you arrive with enough energy left to actually enjoy the view, rather than simply recovering from the climb.
