Hurst Green and neighbouring Stonyhurst make for one of the most rewarding shorter rides in the Ribble Valley – a mix of handsome villages, one of the country’s most striking country houses, and some genuinely excellent places to eat.
The Ride
From Dunsop Bridge, the route to Hurst Green covers around 7 miles, largely following the valley before a short climb up towards the village itself. It’s an ideal distance for a relaxed half-day out, or as the starting point for a longer loop taking in Chipping or Whalley.
Stonyhurst College
Stonyhurst, a short ride from Hurst Green village, is one of the finest 16th-century country houses in Lancashire and now home to a well-regarded independent school. The grounds and gardens are open to visitors at various times through the year, and the building itself – all towers, turrets and formal gardens – is well worth the detour even if you only see it from the approach road.
Cycling Around Scenic Stonyhurst
The lanes around Stonyhurst are quiet, well-surfaced and rolling rather than steep, making this a great option for families or less experienced riders who still want a proper day out rather than a flat, featureless ride.
Where to Eat
Hurst Green punches well above its weight for a small village – The Shireburn Arms and the Bayley Arms both have strong reputations, and either makes an excellent lunch stop roughly at the midpoint of a longer ride. If you’re after something more special, book ahead, as both are popular with visitors well beyond the immediate area.
Extending the Ride
From Hurst Green, several of our recommended routes head further afield – towards Gisburn, Chipping, or Waddington Fell – making this a useful hub for a variety of loop lengths depending on how much of the day you want to spend in the saddle.
